Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome

An extremely rare disease causing clots in the blood vessels of the kidneys, which can restrict blood flow causing kidney damage and ultimately kidney failure.

Bladder Stones (Calculi)

Deposits of minerals such as calcium and magnesium that crystallize, sometimes causing severe pain in the lower abdomen and back, difficult or frequent urination, blood in the urine, and fever.

Chronic Kidney Disease

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children prevents the kidneys from properly filtering wastes out of blood. Learn more about causes, symptoms and treatment.

Cystinosis

A condition in which cystine builds up and forms crystals in the cells. These crystals cause damage in many organs and tissues, especially the kidneys and the eyes.

Epispadias

A term used to describe when the urethral opening is in an abnormal location. In males, the opening is usually on the topside of the penis and not the tip.

Failure to Thrive

A condition that occurs when a baby does not gain weight and grow normally; caused by many factors, including disease or poor nutrition.

Focal Segmental Glomerular Sclerosis (FSGS)

A pattern of kidney damage and a common cause of nephrotic syndrome, occurring when the body loses large amounts of protein into the urine, resulting in swelling of the body.

Fragility Fractures

Fragility fractures are broken bones, or fractures, that happen following a low trauma event. Examples of low trauma events would be falls from a standing height or less. Learn more.

Glomerulonephropathy and Glomerulonephritis

Diseases of the glomeruli — the mass of tiny, semipermeable tubes deep in the kidneys through which the blood passes, filtering out water and soluble wastes.

Hemolytic-Uremic Syndrome

A kidney disease caused by an overabundance of damaged red blood cells filling the kidneys, hindering them from doing their normal function of filtering.

Hypertension

Usually used to mean elevated blood pressure, caused by resistance to blood flow in the body. May result from certain types of medication, anxiety, or kidney problems.

Juvenile Osteoporosis

In children, the term osteoporosis is used when the density of the bones is significantly below normal (noted on the DXA scan) and they have a fracture history. Learn more.
