Summer-Only Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in summer volunteering! We are no longer accepting applications for the 2018 10-Week Summer Program or the Summer Intensive Program. Check back at a later date for information about 2019 opportunities. These programs are not for college students who attend local colleges/universities.

Note: We are grateful for the number of generous individuals who want to help during summer hours, but we are usually not able to provide positions for everyone who applies. ​

Track 1: 10-Week Summer Program

2018 Application deadline has passed.

In our 10-week summer program, volunteers will have the opportunity to work directly with patients and families in a variety of hospitality and outpatient clinic roles throughout the hospital. Those who are selected will be asked to commit to 10 consecutive weeks of volunteering, once a week for a regularly scheduled three-hour shift, between June and August.

To have their applications be considered, volunteers must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be at least 16 years old by June 1, 2018, to apply.
  • Must submit application between March 1–April 6, 2018. 
  • All applicants will be notified of their status by April 20, 2018.
  • Must be able to commit to 10 consecutive weeks of volunteering, once a week for a regularly scheduled three-hour shift, between June and August 2018.

If selected, applicants must also complete the following steps:

  1. A health and immunization record review. Learn more about the requirements.
  2. A scheduled individual interview with a volunteer coordinator
  3. A criminal background check, provided by Lurie Children’s
  4. A 3-hour orientation
  5. Payment of $20 processing fee for the cost of volunteer uniforms and other related expenses
  6. Assignment-specific training with a staff supervisor

Track 2: Summer Intensive Program

2018 Application deadline has passed. 

In our summer intensive program, volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in a service project to benefit Lurie Children’s patients, a behind-the-scenes tour of the hospital, a career panel discussion and an interactive patient/family experience discussion. Those who are selected may participate in one or both of two service/education days. The application for the 2018 Summer Programs will be posted on March 1, 2018. All applicants will be notified of their status by April 20, 2018.

To have their applications be considered, volunteers must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be at least 16 years old by June 1, 2018, to apply.
  • Must submit application between March 1–​April 6, 2018.
  • All applicants will be notified of their status by April 20, 2018.
  • Must be able to commit to at least one of the two service/education days.

 

Track 3: Community Volunteer Corps 

Volunteers will have the opportunity to serve as Lurie Children’s advocates for preventing childhood injuries in the community. Community Volunteer Corps volunteers provide onsite education at community events through interactive games on topics such as poison prevention, bike safety, pedestrian safety and preventing window falls. Events will run from May-September.
