Summer-Only Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in summer volunteering! The application period for our 2019 Summer Programs will span from February 1, 2019 to March 8, 2019. All applicants will be notified of their status by March 16, 2019.

If you attend a local college or university, please apply through the College Volunteer Program, which operates year round and has a wider range of opportunities.


Track 1: 10-Week Summer Program          

In our 10-week summer program, volunteers will have the opportunity to work directly with patients and families in a variety of hospitality and outpatient clinic roles throughout the hospital. Those who are selected will be asked to commit to 10 consecutive weeks of volunteering, once a week for a regularly scheduled three-hour shift, between June and August.

To have their applications be considered, volunteers must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be at least 16 years old by June 1, 2019, to apply
  • Must submit application between February 1– March 8, 2019 
  • All applicants will be notified of their status by March 16, 2019
  • Must be able to commit to 10 consecutive weeks of volunteering, once a week for a regularly scheduled three-hour shift, between June and August 2019

If selected, applicants must also complete the following steps:

  1. A health and immunization record review 
  2. A scheduled individual interview
  3. A criminal background check, provided by Lurie Children’s
  4. A 3-hour orientation
  5. Payment of $20 processing fee for the cost of volunteer uniforms and other related expenses
  6. Assignment-specific training with a staff supervisor

Track 2: Summer Intensive Program

In our summer intensive program, volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in a service project to benefit Lurie Children’s patients, a behind-the-scenes tour of the hospital, a career panel discussion and an interactive patient/family experience discussion. Those who are selected may participate in one or both of two service/education days. The application for the 2019 Summer Programs will be posted on February 1, 2019. All applicants will be notified of their status by March 16, 2019.

To have their applications be considered, volunteers must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be at least 16 years old by June 1, 2018, to apply
  • Must submit application between February 1– March 8, 2019
  • All applicants will be notified of their status by March 16, 2019
  • Must be able to commit to at least one of the two service/education days
