U.S.News & World Report Honor Roll
Lurie Children’s was the only hospital in Illinois ranked in all 10 specialties and was one of 11 hospitals nationally to receive the Honor Roll award. Learn more about our badges and rankings.
In 2001, our hospital was the nation’s first pediatric freestanding hospital and the first hospital in Illinois to earn the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence. In 2015, Lurie Children’s was re-designated for a fourth time; less than 1% of hospitals have been designated three times. Read more about our Magnet status.
Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP)
Lurie Children’s has been awarded full accreditation by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP). AAHRPP promotes high quality, ethically sound research through an accreditation process that helps organizations worldwide strengthen their research protection programs. As an independent, non-profit accrediting body, AAHRPP uses a voluntary, peer-driven, educational model to ensure that human research protection programs meet rigorous standards.
Joint Commission Top Performer
In 2011 and 2012, Lurie Children’s was recognized as a Top Performer in The Joint Commission’s Top Performers on Key Quality Measures™ program. Lurie Children’s made the list for achieving excellence on its accountability measures in using evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for children’s asthma during 2011 and 2010. In 2012, Lurie Children’s was among just seven hospitals in the country to earn the Top Performer award for children’s asthma.
'Top Children’s Hospital' for Patient Safety
In 2016, Lurie Children's was one of only nine children's hospitals nationwide – and the only one in Illinois – to be recognized as a “Top Children’s Hospital” for patient safety by The Leapfrog Group, a national consortium of healthcare payers that promotes “leaps” in patient safety. Leapfrog’s Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most prestigious distinctions any hospital can achieve in the United States. Learn more about the award.
LEED-certified to the Gold Level
In 2014, the U.S. Green Building Council designated Lurie Children’s with the second highest sustainability rating, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification. The LEED® green building program is the preeminent program for the design, construction, maintenance and operations of high-performance green buildings.
Level 1 Pediatric Surgery Center
Lurie Children’s was named a level I pediatric surgery center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), becoming the first children’s hospital in Illinois to earn this status.
Parents Magazine Top 10 Pediatric Hospital
Lurie Children’s was ranked tenth in the country among pediatric hospitals according to an exclusive survey by Parents magazine. The hospital also ranked 8th for Cancer Care.The survey focused on key areas including treatment success, groundbreaking research and family-friendly facilities. Read the Parents news release.

Health Care's Most Wired 2017: Lurie Children's was recognized for demonstratingleadership and commitment to using health IT as a differentiator in improving care coordination, quality and outcomes. The 2017 Most Wired® survey and benchmarking study is a leading industry barometer measuring information technology (IT) use and adoption among hospitals nationwide.
Becker’s Hospital Review's 100 Great Hospitals in America: Lurie Children’s is included in Becker's Hospital Review's 2017 list of “100 Great Hospitals in America.” This list was based on nominations and evaluation of hospital ranking sources, such as U.S. News & World Report, Magnet designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the Leapfrog Group and other resources. Becker’s Hospital Review is a monthly publication on business and legal issues relating to hospitals and health systems.
Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality: The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation recognized Lurie Children's as a “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality” based on our top marks in meeting non-discrimination and training criteria that demonstrate our commitment to equitable, inclusive care for LGBT patients and their families.
Top 30 Nurse-Friendly U.S. Hospitals: Lurie Children's was recognized by TopRNtoBSN.com as one of the 30 Most Nurse-Friendly Hospitals in the U.S. based on our benefits program, training opportunities and employee appreciation.

HAVE Volunteer Award: American Hospital Association (AHA) honored Lurie Children’s volunteer program, ParentWise, with its Hospital Awards for Volunteer Excellence (HAVE).
Business Impact of the Year Award: The Magnificent Mile Association recognized Lurie Children’s with its Business Impact of the Year Award, presented to a business that demonstrates innovative ideas that impact the Magnificent Mile neighborhood.
IHA Quality Excellence Achievement Award: The Illinois Hospital Association (IHA) awarded Lurie Children's the Quality Excellence Achievement Award in the Urban Hospital category at the 2013 IHA Leadership Summit. We were recognized for our SOS: Save Our Skin – Pediatric Pressure Ulcer Prevention Program. Read the news release.
Lantern Award from the Emergency Nurses Association: Lurie Children's is one of 17 hospital emergency departments nationwide to receive the Lantern Award. This award is a visible symbol of an emergency department’s commitment to quality, presence of a healthy work environment and accomplishment in incorporating evidence-based practice and innovation into emergency care. Division, Department and Program Awards
2014 Path to Excellence Award: Our inpatient care units were recognized by the National Research Corporation for their quality of care improvement and their increased focus on patient-centered care. The annual award is given to hospitals and healthcare innovators recognized as leading the way toward patient-centered care.
SCCM Award: The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) was recently recognized by the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) National Congress in San Juan, Puerto Rico, as the winner of the 2013 ICU Design Citation Award. This is an annual award that is given to an intensive care unit that is new or has been redesigned.
Children’s Hospital Association C.A.R.E. Award: Lurie Children’s received important honors for quality of care at the Children’s Hospital Association (CHA) Leadership Conference. Mary Lynn Rae, RN, MSN, CPON, Clinical Educator, won the prestigious C.A.R.E. (Champion of Analytics and Research Excellence) Award, which recognizes children’s hospitals for their data-driven examination and advancement of improved, efficient, safe, timely and effective care using CHA analytics resources.
Excellence in Care Award: The Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA/Chicago) presented Lurie Children’s with an Excellence in Care Award for providing outstanding services, preventive education and outreach to people in the Chicago area who are HIV positive, living with AIDS or are at risk of infection.
Siemens' Right Dose Excellence Award: In December 2013, our Department of Medical Imaging was given the Pediatric Imaging and Dose Consistency Award for outstanding use of low radiation dose CT scans. Our medical imaging staff is part of the nationwide Image Gently movement to reduce radiation exposure.
Patient-Centered Medical Home Program: In 2015, Lurie Children's Pediatrics - Uptown was recognized as a Patient-Centered Medical Home Program by the National Committee for Quality Assurance.
