Solid Tumor Program

The Solid Tumor Program at Lurie Children’s is a multidisciplinary program dedicated to providing world-class care to children, adolescents and young adults with cancer. Experts in pediatric oncology, surgical oncology, radiation therapy, pathology and medical imaging come together to create a specialized treatment team, based on the unique needs of each patient, and work with your family to develop an optimal treatment plan for your child. Our team combines nationally-renowned expertise and a patient-centered approach to offer each patient the best experience and best possible outcome.

Lurie Children’s is the ranked as one of the top pediatric cancer programs in the nation by U.S.News & World Report, and offers the most advanced treatment options in the region. Patients have access to new and cutting-edge treatment protocols through the program's research partners and affiliations.

The Lurie Children's Difference

While many hospitals care for children with cancer, none in the region offer the breadth and depth of Lurie’s Children's robust multidisciplinary program. All patients are treated by an oncologist with a specialty focus on pediatric solid tumors and our core surgical team has a specialty focus on pediatric surgical oncology. All patients benefit from a team approach to their care, including dedicated pediatric advanced practice nurses (APNs), social workers and child life specialists who work to ensure the most patient- and family-centered approach to therapy.

Specialists

The multidisciplinary solid tumors team is a partnership between pediatric oncologists and surgical specialists. Each patient is treated by a collaborative team that includes expertise specific to the patient and their unique needs. The program is led by medical director Jennifer L. Reichek, MD, MSW, and surgical director Timothy Lautz, MD.

The solid tumor oncology program includes a group of pediatric oncologists focused exclusively on the care of children with solid tumors. All are actively involved in the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) and each brings a unique area of expertise to our program. Through weekly multidisciplinary conferences, group consensus discussions help ensure that all patients receive the optimal therapy.

The program also includes surgical specialists that offer innovative treatments using the latest technology, including fluorescence-guided surgery, to help visualize tumors during surgery, robotic surgery and other minimally-invasive techniques, and fertility preservation procedures.
