Iselin Disease (Apophysitis of the Fifth Metatarsal)

Painful irritation and inflammation of the apophysis (growth plate) at the base of the 5th metatarsal (foot bone), where one of the calf muscles inserts.

Joint Hypermobility Syndrome

Describing joints that easily move beyond the normal range. It is commonly called being ‘double-jointed,’ although these individuals do not have two separate joints.

Juvenile Osteochondritis Dissecans

A disorder occurring in young people with growth plates not closed yet; a loosening of a piece of bone and the cartilage that covers it; can lead to early arthritis.

Little League Elbow (Medial Epicondylar Apophysitis)

Irritation and inflammation of the growth plate on the inner side of the elbow, occurring in young baseball players and in other sports where players throw often.

Little League Shoulder (Proximal Humeral Epiphysitis)

Irritation and inflammation of the growth plate in the upper arm bone, occurring most often in pitchers and other athletes who do repetitive overhead movements with their arms.

Lymphadenopathy

Lymphadenopathy is the swelling of the lymph nodes, which are the bean-shaped organs found in the underarm, groin, neck, chest and abdomen. Learn more about causes.

Mallet Finger

An injury involving the last joint of the finger caused either by injury to the extensor tendon or to the bone where it inserts. The extensor tendon straightens the last joint.

Medial Collateral Ligament Injuries

Injury to one of the four major ligaments of the knee, connecting the thigh bone to the shinbone, typically by a blow to the outside of the knee or an inward twisting of the knee.

Medial Epicondyle Avulsion Fracture

An elbow injury that occurs most often in young baseball players. These fractures of the bony protrusion inside the elbow, are the most common elbow injury during adolescence.

Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (Shin Splints)

A condition that causes pain over the shin bone, the most common cause of “shin splints,” the general term used to describe sports-related pain over that bone.

Meniscus Injuries

Athletes most commonly tear the meniscus during a sudden twisting, pivoting, cutting or decelerating motion of the knee with the foot planted on the ground. Learn more.

Metatarsal Stress Fractures

Fractures occurring in the second, third and fourth metatarsal bones of the foot, usually caused by repetitive, high-impact, weight-bearing activities.
