Microbiology Laboratory
The Microbiology Laboratory is a full-service laboratory specializing in pediatric microbiology. The Microbiology Laboratory offers a diverse test menu that spans aerobic and anaerobic bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, molecular microbiology, parasitology, antigen/toxin detection, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Working closely with other teams throughout the hospital, including the Infectious Disease, Antimicrobial Stewardship, and Infection Prevention and Control teams, the Microbiology Laboratory performs a number of tests to support the diagnosis of infectious disease. Using traditional techniques in addition to state-of-the-art test methodologies, such as MALDI-TOF, multiplex molecular pathogen detection, and rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing, the lab aids in the diagnosis of many diseases.
The Microbiology Laboratory is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and serves the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and several outreach programs. The Microbiology Laboratory also supports the research and academic missions of the institution through participation in clinical research and in the education of fellows, residents, medical students, and clinical laboratory sciences students.
