Clinical Chemistry
The clinical chemistry laboratory focuses on the analysis of various markers in body fluids such as serum, plasma, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid. This laboratory employs a variety of techniques including technologically-advanced automated analyzers to accommodate high volume workload and complex testing methodologies. We conduct a few specialized tests for confirmation of abnormal newborn screens.
The clinical chemistry laboratory performs approximately 1 million tests annually on a stat and routine basis including:
- General chemistry tests: Electrolytes, enzymes, proteins, lipids, lipoproteins, hormones, tumor markers, and others.
- Therapeutic drug monitoring and toxicology screens
- Bone and mineral metabolism markers
- Hemoglobin variants and thalassemia
- Sweat chloride testing for Cystic Fibrosis
The clinical chemistry laboratory is open 24 hours daily 7 days a week, is a full service laboratory serving the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and several outreach programs. We support the research and academic missions of the institution through participation in clinical research and in the education of fellows, residents, medical students, and medical laboratory technology students.
