Brachial Plexus: Orthotic Treatment

Our specialists work within a multidisciplinary team who is uniquely familiar with the needs of those with a brachial plexus injury. We design, fabricate, and fit orthoses (braces) to help patients improve their range of motion, increase strength and function, or promote healing after surgery. In addition to orthotic management, patients also have access to rehabilitation training with our physical therapy and occupational therapy teams.

What to Expect

Patients can schedule an appointment with the orthotics team for a consultation after they’ve received a prescription or referral from a physician. 

Consultation

At the first appointment, our team will ask questions and perform a brief clinical evaluation to assess the functional needs of your child. Once we’ve determined the best device to meet your child’s goals, we’ll contact your insurance provider to determine your coverage and obtain pre-authorization if necessary.

Evaluation

Once coverage is verified and pre-authorization obtained, we’ll schedule a full evaluation with your child. It is here where custom measurements, or a cast will be taken of your child to ensure optimal fit and function of your child’s new device. Most devices are custom made by our team onsite, a process that may take 2-3 weeks.

Pick-up

After the brace is made, patients come in for a fitting to ensure it’s the correct size and comfortable.

Follow-up

Follow-up is an important part of orthotic management. Your child’s brace may need to be periodically checked and adjusted due to growth and/or progress.
