Evaluating the Impact of Diabetes Camp Research Study

Our research team at Lurie Children’s is looking for children and teens with type 1 diabetes who have never attended overnight diabetes camp before to participate in a research study about going to diabetes camp for the first time. We want to understand what going to diabetes camp is like and what the impact of camp is for youth who have experienced financial or other barriers to attending overnight diabetes camp.

Who Can Sign Up?

We are recruiting youth with type 1 diabetes (ages 8-16 years) who:

  • Are interested in going to overnight diabetes camp but have difficulty attending due to financial or other barriers.
  • Have never attended an overnight diabetes camp before.
  • Have a parent or legal guardian who is also willing to complete surveys.

What is Involved?

  • Youth would receive a full scholarship to attend an overnight diabetes camp this year (2026) or next year (2027). They would also receive a stipend to help pay for transportation to camp and/or camp supplies. The year they receive this scholarship and stipend (2026 or 2027) will be chosen randomly.
  • After completing a consent form and demographics form, all youth and caregivers would be sent online surveys starting Summer 2026 four times: (1) Beginning of summer, (2) End of summer, (3) 6 months post-summer, (4) 12 months post-summer. Each survey will take about 20 minutes to complete.
  • If the child uses a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), we would ask permission to download 14 days of CGM data at each of those four times.
  • After attending diabetes camp, youth and caregivers will be asked to participate in a focus group or individual interview about their experience with diabetes camp.

Will I Be Compensated?

Children and caregivers will each be paid up to $135 with e-gift cards for completing surveys and focus groups to a vendor of their choice (e.g., Amazon, Target). A portion of that amount will be sent after each survey/focus group is completed.
