Randomized Controlled Trial

We have tested PICU Supports in the clinical setting by conducting a pilot study at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago (Lurie Children’s). We are now conducting a randomized controlled trial comparing parents who receive PICU Supports with parents who receive an educational brochure about the PICU.

The randomized controlled trial is being conducted at Lurie Children's and at University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital (Comer Children’s Hospital). During the randomized controlled trial, enrolled participants are randomized to receive either the intervention or an educational brochure about the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Using parents' reports, we are obtaining information about the following outcomes to determine if PICU Supports is helpful:

  • Satisfaction with decision making
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Symptoms of post-traumatic stress
  • Global Health
  • Healthcare team communication
  • Complicated Grief
