Pediatric Anesthesiology Research

The Department of Pediatric Anesthesiology is continuously dedicated to pursuing the advancement of pediatric anesthesiology and enhancing the safety and comfort of our young patients through clinical research.

From the operating room to the recovery units, the faculty works directly with young patients, their families and collaborating institutions to investigating innovative procedures, techniques and devices to improve patient outcomes in pain management and safety.

Research Studies

  • Determining whether intraoperative infusion of magnesium decreases postoperative pain: This listed, randomized controlled clinical trial aims to determine whether giving intravenous magnesium administration during tonsillectomies will decrease postoperative pain and medication use.
  • Comparison of the FDA approved Buzzy® device to intravenous lidocaine for controlling injection pain during intravenous propofol induction: This study examines whether this "buzzing" device helps reduce the burning sensation accompanied with propofol injection prior to anesthetic sedation.
  • Determining the safety and efficacy of supraglottic airway use in children: This study examines instances where devices were used for airway management to identify preferred device, ease of use and complications.
  • Utilizing ultrasound for confirmation of successful caudal epidural injections: Ultrasound imaging is already used to help visualize anesthetic injection during sensory nerve blockade, but has not been confirmed as a method of determining whether the block is successful. This study aims to provide evidence that an experienced user can recognize failed blocks with implications for how trainees learn the procedure.
