What to Expect
The goal of the gynecology visit is to develop a diagnostic and treatment plan that is efficient and comfortable for patients. Gynecologic care for children and adolescents differs from that of adults. The visit typically includes a detailed discussion of the gynecologic concern and a review of any prior evaluations.
For common issues in teens like menstrual pain or heavy bleeding, a physical exam is often not needed to begin treatment. When a pelvic exam is necessary, it can be performed in the office or under sedation. Lab tests may also be recommended and can be completed in the office during the visit. When imaging of the pelvis is needed, a transabdominal ultrasound is ordered.
