Neurologic Disorders & Injuries

The central nervous system is made up of the brain, spinal cord and nerves throughout the body. Disorders in any of these areas (with more than 600 documented) can come from many causes. They can be hereditary such as Huntington’s, muscular dystrophy and spina bifida. They can degenerate over time such as in Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s. They can be caused by problems in blood supply such as stroke. And they can be caused by injuries, such as concussion or spinal cord injury. They can be seizure disorders such as epilepsy, or cancer such as brain tumors, or from infections such as meningitis.

Any of these can cause structural, chemical or electrical disturbances in the nervous system. These result in weakness, paralysis, lack of coordination or sensation, confusion or pain.

Treatments usually involve preventive and lifestyle measures, physical therapy, pain management, medications and various surgical procedures.
