Like tongue-tie, lip tie occurs when a piece of tissue (a frenulum) behind the upper lip is short and tight. Unlike tongue-tie, the presence of a frenulum behind the upper lip is considered normal in infants.

A physician can examine the tissue to determine if a procedure is necessary to loosen the lip tie, similar to the frenotomy for a tongue-tie.
