The Hematological Malignancy Program at Lurie Children’s is a comprehensive program dedicated to providing world-class care to children, adolescents, and young adults with blood and lymph node cancers (leukemia and lymphoma) and histiocytic disorders. Lurie Children’s is ranked as one of the top pediatric cancer programs in the nation by U.S.News & World Report and offers the most advanced treatment options in the region. Patients have access to new and cutting-edge treatment protocols through the program's research partners and affiliations.
The Lurie Children's Difference
While many hospitals care for children with cancer, none in the region offer the breadth and depth of Lurie’s Children's robust multidisciplinary program or accessibility to clinical trials.
- All patients are treated by an oncologist with a specialty focus on pediatric hematological malignancies and benefit from a team approach to their care, including dedicated pediatric advanced practice nurses (APNs), registered nurses, social workers, child life specialists, and psychologists who work to ensure the most patient- and family-centered approach to therapy.
- Many patients receive part or all their therapy in our outpatient clinics or Ambulatory Infusion Center, which provide comprehensive outpatient treatment and flexibility with family-friendly hours.
- We provide patients access to clinical trials of innovative therapies and supportive care approaches whenever possible and in-line with patient and family goals.
- We work with a team of experts in our Stem Cell Transplantation, CAR T-Cell Therapy, Radiation Oncology Programs to provide the full spectrum of care for patients with blood and lymph node cancers right here at Lurie Children’s.
- Our physicians have expertise in clinical and laboratory research and clinical trial development for the disorders we treat.

Treasure Cart for Patients
written by Kenisha Premsukh
On March 28, 2024, the Hematological Malignancy Team excitedly unveiled a new Treasure Cart, brimming with toys and gifts for our young patients visiting our Ambulatory Clinic. These gifts, along with the fun activities led by our amazing Child Life Specialists, provide a welcome distraction for children undergoing lumbar punctures and other challenging procedures during their visits. Thanks to the generous donations we received, the Treasure Cart is stocked with age-appropriate toys, games, and gift cards.
In the fall of 2023, the team happily announced the return of a beloved toy treasure chest, which was removed in 2020 due to COVID-19 health concerns. After months of hard work and organization, the brand-new Treasure Cart was introduced in the spring of 2024. It has quickly become a cherished part of our clinic experience, bringing a bit of joy and comfort to our patients and their families. Maureen Haugen, MS, APN, CPNP, CPON, said "The Treasure Cart has brought an element of joy back to the usually difficult treatment of our patients. Our valued donors and staff are thrilled to be a part of this experience!" Many children now eagerly look forward to choosing their next present from the Treasure Cart, making each visit a little brighter.
