Prior to discharge home from the hospital, every baby needs a pediatrician. Some families have a pediatrician in mind prior to the baby’s birth, and others have not yet decided on a pediatrician. The following list includes a few important things to consider when making this decision:
How close is the pediatrician to your home? Often having a pediatrician a short distance away is helpful.
Does the pediatrician have office hours at night or on weekends?
Is the pediatrician comfortable with your baby’s medical condition and anticipated needs? They do not need to be an expert, but they need to be able to tell you when to call the specialist.
Most pediatric groups encourage families to visit prior to the baby’s birth.
