Dental Infections (Odontogenic Infection)

Dental infections, or odontogenic infections, are caused by bacteria that have penetrated deep into the tooth or gums. These infections typically include dental caries and periodontal diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis.

However, if left untreated, the infection can spread further into the gum, the jaw, and surrounding tissues of the face, head, and neck. Bacterial infection from such sources can even ultimately affect the heart and brain.

Signs of dental infection include inflammation, accompanied by redness, swelling, warmth, pain, and reduced function. Medical/dental help should be sought immediately.
