Complement Deficiency

Complement deficiency is a rare genetic disorder that causes the immune system to malfunction, causing immunodeficiency.

When individuals are immunodeficient, their bodies are not able to fight off infections from bacteria, viruses, and fungi. They have a much higher risk of recurrent bacterial infections, specifically of the lungs (pneumonia), the membrane covering the brain and spinal cord (meningitis), and the blood (sepsis). These infections occur mostly in infancy and childhood, becoming less frequent with age.
