Chronic Pain Management

Our Chronic Pain Treatment Program offers the compassion and experience of pediatric anesthesiologists, nurses and a clinical psychologist working together to care for your child. Patients are seen by experts in one of the nation's leading programs for innovative pain medicine evaluation and treatment of children.

The team works to optimize your child's level of comfort and increase their ability to function in everyday life. Treatment includes medication management, counseling and instruction in relaxation techniques. Community referrals to alternative therapies are available. Occasionally, invasive procedures are used to provide aggressive pain management.

Before Your Visit

If your child has been referred by a doctor outside of Lurie Children’s, we will require a medical summary or visit notes from that physician prior to your child’s first visit. Ask the referring physician’s office to fax notes to us at 312.227.9730.

Plan to arrive at your appointment location 15 minutes early. Allow enough time to find parking and our office, located on the main hospital's 7th floor. Unfortunately, families who are late may face extended wait times, and in some instances, may be asked to reschedule for another day.

Patients must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Questionnaires will be mailed to you; please bring the completed questionnaires to your first visit.

Need to cancel or reschedule? Call us directly at 312.227.5157 at least 24 hours in advance. It helps us, and it helps other families receive timely care.

Bring with You

  • Copies of any previous x-rays, CT scans, MRIs on CD or films.
  • All medications your child is currently taking

You can continue to give your child any previously prescribed medications

Psychological Evaluations

Since chronic pain often causes disruption in normal childhood activities, all Chronic Pain Treatment Program patients receive psychological evaluations. Our pediatric psychologist can recommend ways to strengthen coping skills and suggest ways to deal with pain. Please note, you will receive a separate bill for this evaluation.

You may want to contact your insurance carrier to understand your plan’s specific mental health coverage.

If your plan requires a referral, you can fax it to 312.227.9730 or bring it with you.
