Specialty Pharmacy
Lurie Children's Specialty Pharmacy supports patients and families managing rare or complex medical conditions across Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. Specialty medications often require extra support, whether due to how they're stored and administered, their cost, or the need for insurance coordination, and our team is trained to guide you through every step.
What Are Specialty Medications?
Specialty medications are used to treat rare or complex medical conditions such as cystic fibrosis, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, endocrine disorders, and many others. They often differ from standard prescriptions in a few important ways:
- Special handling: Many require refrigeration or other specific storage conditions
- Unique administration: Some are given through injections or infusions rather than taken by mouth
- Higher cost: They are often more expensive and may require additional help with insurance coverage or copay assistance
- Added support: Because of these complexities, they are dispensed through a specialty pharmacy, where a trained team provides the extra education and coordination these therapies require
