Across the country, transgender and gender nonconforming people are at a disproportionately high risk for violence and harassment, particularly when they’re trying to access bathroom facilities. This year Lurie Children’s joined other leading organizations in releasing an institutional position statement supporting transgender people and their right to access facilities such as bathrooms. In addition to supporting access to multi-stall restrooms in accordance with one’s gender identity, our hospital also proudly offers “All-Gender Restrooms.” These inclusive restrooms provide increased access for guests, staff and families of all genders to safely use our single-occupancy restrooms.
Why Provide "All-Gender Restrooms"?
We aim to be inclusive of diverse family structures.
We want to provide increased access to restroom facilities for transgender and gender nonconforming individuals.
We have established ourselves as community leaders around gender inclusion.
Who Might Benefit from These Restrooms?
These restrooms may be helpful to individuals and families who:
Care for children/adolescents who are a different gender
Support of Safe School Environments for Transgender & Gender Expansive Youth
The Gender & Sex Development Program at Lurie Children's fully supports the statement linked to below from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which identifies the need to protect and support transgender and gender expansive youth. It is essential for all children to be provided with safe school environments where they can learn and thrive.
Lurie Children's will continue to advocate for transgender and gender expansive children and adolescents in healthcare, in their schools and in our communities.
