Internationally renowned neonatal heart surgeon, Joseph Forbess, MD, joined Lurie Children’s in July as the Associate Division Head of Pediatric Cardiovascular-Thoracic Surgery and Surgical Director of the Single Ventricle Reconstruction Program.
Dr. Forbess received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed his residency and fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. He began his career at Children’s Hospital Boston. Recently he was Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas from 2004 to 2016. Dr. Forbess has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and has given nearly 60 invited presentations.
In addition to his surgical expertise in complex single and biventricular reconstruction in neonates, Dr. Forbess is a well-established scientist. His research interests include the development of bioresorbable (or naturally-dissolving) stents, coatings and nanoparticles for use in pediatric vascular and airway applications. He will continue this innovative work at the Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute, where all research at Lurie Children’s is conducted.
