Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago ranked #1 in Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery in Newsweek’s list of America’s Best Children’s Hospitals 2024. The hospital was listed in the top 10 in three other specialties – Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery (#3), Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Surgery (#6) and Oncology and Hematology (#8).

Lurie Children’s was also ranked in Neurology and Neurosurgery (#11), Orthopedics (#12), Endocrinology (#17) and Neonatology (#20).

“We are proud to be recognized for the compassionate, high-quality care we provide to every child who needs us,” said Derek Wheeler, MD, MMM, MBA, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Lurie Children’s. “We continue to pursue the best outcomes delivered in a reliably safe environment, with patients and families always at the center of our care.”

The America’s Best Children’s Hospitals 2024 ranking awards 175 leading hospitals in eight pediatric subspecialties: Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Surgery, Neonatology, Oncology and Hematology, Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery, Neurology and Neurosurgery, and Orthopedics.

The underlying data analysis is based on four data sources:

  • Nationwide Online Survey: Healthcare professionals and hospital managers with knowledge about pediatric care e.g., general and specialized pediatricians and nurses were asked to recommend leading children’s hospitals in the US. The survey was also promoted on newsweek.com

  • Hospital Quality Metrics: Hospital quality metrics with a focus on indicators from the AHA Annual Survey of Hospitals Database were considered.

  • Results from Patient Experience Surveys: Survey of patient experience during hospitalization.

  • Statista Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS) Implementation Survey: Voluntary PROMS implementation survey to determine the status quo of PROMs implementation, audits and reporting of data.

“We are thrilled that Lurie Children’s Heart Center was ranked #1 in the country by Newsweek,” said Stuart Berger, MD, Division Head of Cardiology at Lurie Children’s and Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “This national recognition is a great honor and a testament to the excellent care we offer and the incredible team that has been assembled to care for children and young adults with the most complex heart conditions.”

The Heart Center at Lurie Children’s brings a spectrum of cardiac specialists together to care for patients throughout their lifespans — from before birth, through childhood and into adulthood. The Heart Center’s Regenstein Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) is a state-of-the-art 44-bed unit devoted to the care of young patients with cardiac disease. It is one of the few cardiac units of its kind in the nation, allowing each child to stay in the same private room from admission to discharge. The rooms are technologically equipped for intensive care while providing the family amenities of a regular acute care patient room. Research shows that this unique model of care greatly improves patient and family comfort and satisfaction, as well as patient safety.

Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago is a nonprofit organization committed to providing access to exceptional care for every child. It is ranked as one of the nation’s top children’s hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. Lurie Children’s is the pediatric training ground for Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
