Lurie Children's Acute Dialysis Program Now Offers 24/7 In-house Dialysis Nursing Coverage
Lurie Children’s Division of Nephrology has launched an independent, Acute Dialysis and Pheresis Therapies (ADAPT) Program with 24/7 in - house dialysis nursing coverage. What was once an outsourced program is now completely owned and operated by Lurie Children’s.
This transition is being uniquely led by both Medical Director of Dialysis, Mahima Keswani, MD, and Clinical Operations Lead of Inpatient Dialysis, Nurse Practitioner, Theresa Mottes, APRN-NP, CPNP-AC, CDN. This leadership duo is excited about the opportunities the ADAPT Program brings.
“Transitioning nursing coverage from an on-call model to one of round the clock, in-house coverage has allowed us to attract a unique group of nurses. Half of our group comes from an inpatient, pediatrics background while the other half comes with adult dialysis experience. Blending the two truly translates to a strong, unique and talented team”, said Mottes. This group of nine nurses can bring forward some of their biggest talents and cross-train when necessary.
“With patient volumes growing and more pediatric specific therapies now available on the market, we saw this as a timely opportunity to bring our program internal, allowing us to be a more nimble, therapeutic care team." said Dr. Keswani. The ADAPT Program offers several types of treatment including CRRT, Hemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis, Plasmapheresis, LDH pheresis with Aquapheresis rolling out by the end of the calendar year.
Lurie Children’s Division of Nephrology, led by Priya Verghese, MD, MPH, performed 3,433 acute dialysis procedures in 2021 and is one of the top 10 pediatric programs in the country.
