Achieving the Best Health Outcomes for Children

January 06, 2020

I am both humbled and excited to assume the role of President & CEO of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and lead this outstanding institution into the future. All of us at Lurie Children’s must be dedicated to achieving the best health outcomes for children. My perspective on how we as an organization attain this fundamental goal has been shaped by my own experiences as both a clinician and a scientist.

I know from personal experience as a pediatric intensive care physician what an awe-inspiring responsibility it is to work with a committed and expert multi-disciplinary team to treat a critically ill child. As I have been proud to do at Lurie Children's, we must be able to look parents in the eye and promise that we will deliver the safest and most advanced care possible. Lurie Children’s will always stand by this promise.

To do so, it is essential to care for the whole family with compassion—listening to and respecting their expert knowledge of their child. Our partnership with families is key to achieving better outcomes for children.

It is critical to establish durable systems that ensure we are providing evidence-based, best practices embedded in our quality initiative and patient safety program. In addition, we must continue to foster a translationally spanning research enterprise to advance our knowledge, in order to advance the quality of care we provide.

Thus, with children and their families in mind, we will reinforce our ongoing efforts to improve quality, enhance patient and family experience, and accelerate discovery of new treatments through research. Recognizing the importance of social influencers, we will also expand our work where children live, learn and play, and partner with more community organizations to address those social factors that determine health.

Ultimately, it is the children that continue to inspire me. Their resilience, curiosity and persistent hope, no matter what challenges they face – this is what convinced me to enter pediatrics from medical school in the first place. And I know from my time here, this is what drives all of us at Lurie Children’s to deliver excellence in the care we provide our patients and families.

I’m excited to work with everyone at Lurie Children’s to advance our essential focus on excellent care driven by innovation and collaboration to achieve the best health outcomes. How privileged we are to serve this highest mission of transforming child health and well-being for generations to come.
