Respiratory Care New Graduate Residency Program
New graduate respiratory therapists are placed into our new graduate residency program upon hire. The residency is a paid program and all residents are employed by Lurie Children's. This innovative and unique program serves as an extended orientation to our organization and assists new graduates in becoming clinically competent, critical thinking clinicians. Our upcoming residencies begin in February and August.
Cirriculum
- Education is provided by experienced Respiratory Therapists, physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and other disciplines.
- 5 months of extended clinical, classroom, and simulation training focused on the care of critically ill children and neonates.
- 80%; One on one precepted training in all of our clinical areas (NICU, PICU, CCU, general care, PACU, OR, ED, and more)
- 20%; Classroom, lab, and Simulation education (physiology, pediatric patient assessment, disease management, mechanical ventilation strategies, pharmacology, ECMO, and much more.
Outcomes and Success
Our residency graduates have worked in our CCU, NICU, PICU, and general areas. They have gone on to become ECMO specialists, team leaders, pulmonary habilitation specialists, preceptors, committee chairs, mentors, and formal managers. We are so delighted by their growth and advancement.

This program is one of only a few in the country and the only one of its kind in the Midwest. Our residency program started in the fall of 2017 with our first group of new graduates and has continued to grow each year. Below are answers to our most commonly asked questions.

Our residency cohorts start in both February and August each year.
We encourage potential residents to apple about a month prior to graduation. We have cohorts in February and August. Interviews generally begin around the time of graduation (December and May.)
Yes. New graduate RTs are hired into RRT positions. As such they are paid an hourly rate just as any other experienced RT would be. We offer competitive hourly rates as well as shift differentials.
Yes. The reisdency is a full time, benefit eligible position. Our staff work three 12 hour shifts per week.
Up to 8 residents can be in a cohort.
New graduate RTs are hired into our department in the same manner as any other new member of our team. The residency serves as an extended orientation to our organization. Upon graduation from our residency, you will remain a full time staff member.
This is preferred. If you have already applied and are just waiting for your license to come in, you may start the residency program.
Yes. We offer up to $5,000 in relocation assistance to those who qualify.
Depending on the staffing upon hire, you might be able to work days, nights or be on a rotation between the two.
As a respiratory therapist you will work with many different types of equipment to help facilitate airway clearance as well as ventilation.
At Lurie Children's, our goal is to provide the highest level of care possible. Because of this, we use 13 different ventilators. You will be trained on these devices throughout the residency program.

Our Respiratory Team
The Respiratory Care Department provides comprehensive care to children in our Pediatric ICU, Neonatal ICU, Cardiac Care Unit, pulmonary and acute care areas, outpatient clinics, and in our level 1 trauma certified emergency department. Lurie Children's therapists are also an integral part of the multidisciplinary care team for our Pulmonary Habilitation Program - one of the largest of its kind in the country - caring for ventilator dependent children. Our Respiratory Therapists are vital members of the care team participating in multidisciplinary care planning, making recommendations for care, and participating in quality improvement initiatives, and research projects.
