Pathology Residency Rotations

The Department of Pathology at Lurie Children’s provides training in pediatric pathology for residents of the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University. In addition, we regularly have rotating residents from pathology residency programs in the Chicago area. We offer two rotating residency options:

Anatomic Pathology Residency Rotation

Residents are exposed to a large number of complex cases covering the variety of pediatric lesions and gain experience in all areas of diagnostic pediatric anatomic pathology including surgical pathology, autopsy pathology, neuropathology, cytology, hematopathology and molecular diagnosis.

All staff pediatric pathologists are committed to teaching and there are numerous didactic lectures/slide sessions geared to enhance the trainee’s knowledge. In addition, the resident participates and presents at numerous interdepartmental conferences, learning to communicate the pathologic findings to clinicians.

Our faculty provides medical direction for the various laboratory specialties including clinical chemistry, hematology, blood bank services, immunology and flow cytometry, microbiology, mass spectrometry, biochemical genetics, cytogenetics, molecular genetics, genetic test consultative services, HLA testing, and point-of-care testing.

The resident rotates through the various laboratory specialties and receives didactic lectures designed by our faculty geared at enhancing the trainee’s knowledge. Residents also participate in laboratory medicine conferences and provide presentations during certain rotations, opportunities that are an important part of mastering the material. Our laboratory medicine faculty are committed to the education and training of residents.
