Pediatric Radiology Fellowship

The pediatric radiology fellowship at Lurie Children’s is a one year fellowship accredited by the ACGME and affiliated with McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University. Fellows learn through exposure to a wide variety of clinical cases in numerous subspecialty areas, one-on-one teaching by our faculty, and numerous clinical and didactic conferences.

  1. To foster development of advanced subspecialty knowledge, clinical experience, and skills in all imaging modalities of pediatric radiology, including fluoroscopy, radiography, ultrasound, body, cardiac & MSK CT/MR, neuro CT/MR, fetal imaging, PET and nuclear medicine, and interventional radiology.
  2. To become expert diagnostic specialists through a solid evidence based approach to both common and rare pediatric diseases of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.
  3. To develop competent and confident independence in the practice of pediatric radiology.
  4. To act as helpful consultants to our clinical colleagues, and excellent educators to our residents and students, and to develop communication and interpersonal skills to meet these aims.
  5. To expand the ability to create new knowledge in pediatric radiology through scholarship. This includes scientific research, a focus on safety and quality, public health, and education.
  6. To develop strong, mentored relationships with the pediatric radiologists in our department, who serve as professional role models of the ACGME core competencies.
  7. To foster safe patient care with adequate supervision at all times.
  8. To provide resources to accomplish these goals, including a healthy and safe work environment, regular conferences and discussions, and educational materials.

All imaging studies interpreted by the fellows are reviewed with one of the 26 board certified pediatric attending radiologists on staff. Teaching is facilitated by our faculty via individual PACS teaching during clinical rotations, daily noon conferences with the rotating radiology residents, and weekly dedicated fellow conferences. Fellows also participate in:

  • Numerous interactive clinical conferences with our referring specialties
  • Weekly interesting case conference
  • Quarterly Journal Club
  • Quarterly Peer Review Conference

Research: Each fellow will work with a mentor on a research project, with the goal of a presentation at a scientific meeting, or paper in a peer-reviewed publication.

Call responsibilities: Our staff work 24/7 and all clinical experience is through shift work during normal daytime hours, evening shifts, weekend shifts, and a night float rotation. There is no separate call from home.

Fellows rotate through different clinical rotations on a weekly basis for exposure to a wide variety of different pediatric radiology subspecialty imaging experience.  There are 6 weeks of elective time built into the curriculum. There is no separate call from home, but there are expected evening and weekend shifts throughout the year, as well as 4 weeks of dedicated night shift.
