Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Fellowship

The Divisions of Cardiology and Critical Care Medicine at Lurie Children’s offer formal advanced training in pediatric cardiac intensive care. We offer a one-year “senior” fellowship in cardiac intensive care and a five-year combined training program in pediatric cardiology and pediatric critical care medicine.

During the one-year fellowship in cardiac intensive care, fellows spend approximately six months on our cardiac ICU service. Other clinical rotations (e.g., catheterization, EP, ECHO, PICU, heart failure/transplant, anesthesia, etc.) are tailored to the fellow’s training background. Participation in clinical research will be expected and supported.

Cardiac intensive care services are provided in the state-of-the-art 36-bed Regenstein Cardiac Care Unit. The unit is staffed by a team of dedicated cardiac intensivists 24/7. Lurie Children’s is ranked among the nation’s top children’s hospitals. Our Heart Center includes 30 attending cardiologists, three pediatric cardiac surgeons, a congenital heart surgery fellowship program, a dedicated cardiac anesthesia service, nine categorical cardiology fellows, 12 critical care fellows and several research coordinators.

Our cardiac surgeons perform over 450 cardiac operations per year and achieve outcomes that rank among the nation’s best (STS-CHS Database). We also have one of the highest volume heart transplant programs in the country and a busy mechanical circulatory support program (including ECMO, E-CPR and ventricular assist devices).
