Adverse Experiences and Children’s Special Health Care Needs

In a population-based study, 20% of children had special health care needs and 43% experienced at least one adverse childhood experience. Children with adverse childhood experiences, particularly family mental illness, domestic violence and neighborhood violence, were much more likely to have special health care needs. Therefore, care for children with special health care needs should better realize, recognize, and respond to childhood traumas.
