About
Dr. Walz received her medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 2009, prior to completing her Pediatrics residency at the University of Texas Southwestern/Children's Medical Center Dallas. She then completed a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology in 2015 and a fellowship in Developmental Therapeutics in 2016 at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University/Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. She subsequently became a member of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology division with a specialization in Solid Tumors at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago in July 2016.
Her research interests involve the study of pediatric high-risk renal tumors and their underlying genetic drivers. As a member of the Children's Oncology Group's Renal Tumor Committee and the Pediatric Preclinical Testing Consortium Disease Committee, she participates in the development of new therapeutic clinical trials, including early phase clinical trials, for renal tumor patients. She serves as the Developmental Therapeutics co-lead for the Renal Tumor Committee and will be leading a Children's Oncology Group-wide clinical trial for the treatment of pediatric patients with newly diagnosed rhabdoid tumor.
In addition, she has also investigated circulating exosomes from pediatric solid tumor patients as biomarkers for use in diagnosis, monitoring of treatment response, and early detection of relapse. This work received funding through a National Institutes of Health R21 Grant in August 2019. Dr. Walz's clinical focus centers on the treatment of pediatric solid tumor patients, including those with renal tumors, liver tumors, germ cell tumors, and sarcomas.
