About

Barbara Lockart is an Advanced Practice Nurse with more than 20 years of pediatric nursing experience. Working in both the Division of General Pediatric Surgery and the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation at Lurie Children’s Hospital, she specializes in the surgical care and treatment of children with a variety of acquired conditions with a particular focus on solid tumors and fertility preservation.

Ms. Lockart is part of the multidisciplinary Fertility and Hormone Preservation and Restoration program team at Lurie Children’s. Together, this team of clinicians is dedicated to providing the option of fertility preservation for pediatric, adolescent and young adult patients, including those cancer patients who may encounter potential complications resulting from aggressive treatments. About 15% of cancer survivors have fertility issues, and Lurie Children’s has developed a comprehensive program to offer solutions to both male and female patients. Fertility preservation can also apply to patients treated for other conditions, such as patients with genetic disorders that might cause infertility or patients with rheumatology disorders who receive medications that might result in infertility.

The fertility program at Lurie Children’s is the only one of its kind in the state of Illinois. A recognized leader in the field of fertility preservation, Ms. Lockart is an active member of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), which is a national group dedicated to improving the outcome for all children with cancer.  She was a stakeholder reviewer for COG’s Supportive Care Guideline for Fertility Preservation. In addition, she also chaired the White Paper Policy on Fertility Preservation for the Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses.

Ms. Lockart has been published numerous times, and presents locally, nationally and internationally on the topic of fertility preservation. She has also participated in more than 15 medical missions in Latin America, Haiti and in European refugee camps.
