About

Dr. Johnston is a Pediatric Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgeon at Lurie Children’s and Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He is also the Director of Surgical Services at Lurie Children's' Outpatient/Surgical Team at Westchester Outpatient Center.

Dr. Johnston is a national leader is pediatric Trans-Oral Robotic Surgery (TORS), and he is one of only a few pediatric head and neck surgeons world-wide that performs this surgical technique. Dr. Johnston has pioneered the use of TORS in the treatment of some challenging cases of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea, and he recently published his technique for TORS for management of thyroglossal duct cysts located in the tongue base.

Dr. Johnston is the Director of Education for the Head & Neck Surgery Program, and he serves as the otolaryngology lead for the Vascular Lesions Center. Dr. Johnston also serves a leadership role for physician wellness for the Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology.

Dr. Johnston received his medical degree from Temple University of Medicine and completed his residency in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Johnston completed his fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard University.

Dr. Johnston is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and is a member of many professional societies including the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology, the North American Skull Base Society, and the American College of Surgeons (ACS). His is a former member of the Board of Directors for the Society of Ear, Nose, and Throat Advancement in Children.

Trans-oral robotic surgery (TORS), disorders/surgery of sinuses/skull base, disorders/surgery of the thyroid/parathyroid glands and vascular malformations.
