Is Acetaminophen (Tylenol) Safe for Kids?
Whether it’s a sudden fever or teething crisis, every parent wants to help when their little one is in pain. Our pediatric expert, Dr. Tomitra Latimer, answers all the questions you may have about using over-the-counter medication Acetaminophen (Tylenol) for children, including safety, dosages and much more.
What is Acetaminophen/Tylenol and how is it different from Ibuprofen?
Acetaminophen (Tylenol, Paracetamol) is a pain reliever and fever reducer. It works primarily in the central nervous system to block pain signals and reduce fever by acting on the body's thermostat.
Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) is a Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID). Like Tylenol, Ibuprofen helps relieve pain, but it also reduces swelling and inflammation.
How long does Tylenol last?
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is absorbed and cleared from the body quickly. While its pain-relieving and fever-reducing effects typically last about 4-6 hours, the drug's duration in the body is measured by its half-life, which is typically around 2-3 hours.
Is Tylenol safe for children?
Tylenol is safe for healthy children when given at the correct dose and frequency based on the child’s weight. The dosing cup that comes with the bottle should be used to accurately measure. It is also important to avoid also giving combination cold and flu products that also have Tylenol, which can lead to accidental overdose or harm.
For children under 2 years of age, please call your doctor’s office for correct amount of Tylenol. For children with liver disease, talk to your doctor first before using.
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) Dosing
Use only enclosed dosing cup specifically designed for use. Find the right dose on the chart below. If possible, use weight to dose; otherwise, use age. Remove the child protective cap and squeeze your child’s dose into the dosing cup. Repeat dose every 4 hours while symptoms last. Do not give more than 5 times in 24 hours

Is Tylenol safe to take during pregnancy?
When used properly, Tylenol is safe to use in pregnancy, per the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American Academy of Pediatrics and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
Note: Tylenol is the safest medication for pain and fever reducer in pregnancy when taken in the recommended dose and frequency (500-1000 mg of Tylenol every 6 hours with a max dose of 3000 mg a day). Fever can be harmful to pregnant people and the baby if left untreated. If there is a need to take Tylenol more than 2-3 days, call your doctor.
Can I take Tylenol every day?
Taking Tylenol every day for a time can negatively affect health and can cause liver damage. It is important to talk to your doctor if you or your child need to take Tylenol for pain more than 7 days and for fever more than 3 days.
If you have questions or concerns about administering Tylenol to your infant, child or young adult, consult with your primary healthcare provider for guidance.
