Forever Grateful: A Mom’s Note to Her Daughter’s Doctor

December 10, 2015

We see amazing moments every day. Here’s one particularly heartwarming story that was posted on the Lurie Children’s Facebook page. Layna’s family was kind enough to allow us to share it here…

Today Layna had her pulmonary clinic visit! During these visits, we meet with Dr. Nicolas Porta, Dr. Steven Lestrud and their assistants! These two doctors have, without a shadow of doubt, saved my baby’s life! She was loving everyone as usual and laughing so hard! What I WASN’T expecting was to hear that this was the last time Dr. Porta had to see her since she is now off the vent! This was a mix of sudden emotions. Obviously it’s amazing as that means it’s a step for the better. Dr. Porta has been with us since the minute we walked into Lurie Children’s! He was there for every “talk” that no parent wants to hear. He held my hand. He sat silently on the floor with me while I cried. He stood with his arm around me as I prayed for them to bring my baby back to life. He made the decision to try ECMO life support even though it was way against her odds. He believed in her. He went to clinics to learn what more he could do. He was always on my side when someone was doubting my decisions. He believed in my abilities to parent and doctor my baby. We have LAUGHED many laughs and cried at her beating the odds!

Layna is not just a patient to Dr Porta! He has been my lifeline and my advocate. I know he is still there, but at the final visit today I needed to give him a shout out!! Without him I may not have my baby girl to bring so many smiles to this world! FOREVER GRATEFUL!!

P.S. She was cleared for her procedures and we will still continue to see pulmonology every six months, thank goodness because I couldn’t handle losing both of them at once!

Thanks for all your love Dr. Porta!
