National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week (MLPW) provides a unique opportunity to increase public understanding of and appreciation for clinical laboratory personnel: Laboratory Professionals Get Results. Accurate and timely, around 3,000 times daily.
It all starts with our gentle Phlebotomists; the relay team includes our Receiving and Processing staff, our experienced Lab Tech crews, our knowledgeable Call Center voices, and our expert Faculty, all available around the clock to assist with laboratory test questions and consults.
Our CLIA approved CAP certified clinical laboratories offer numerous specialized laboratory services that include a wide range of advanced diagnostic testing using state-of-the-art technologies housed in the following sub-specialties:
The Anatomic Pathology Division offers state-of-the-art diagnostic services in Surgical Pathology, Cytopathology, Hematopathology and Autopsy Pathology. These four main areas are supported by a variety of laboratories including Histology, Hematology, Flow Cytometry, Microbiology, Molecular Genetics and Cytogenetics.
The Core Laboratory performs more than 500,000 chemistry, hematology and coagulation tests annually. It focuses on the analysis of various markers in body fluids such as whole blood, serum, plasma, urine and cerebrospinal fluid. This laboratory employs a variety of techniques including technologically-advanced automated analyzers to accommodate a high volume workload and complex testing methodologies. The laboratory also provides sweat chloride analysis for the Cystic Fibrosis Center at Lurie Children’s which is accredited by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
This lab supports the transfusion needs for a highly complex patient population (Hemolytic Auto Immune Disorders, ABO-incompatible heart transplants, patients placed on Emergency-Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, ABO incompatible stem cell transplants, solid organ transplants, and level 1 trauma). It is FDA registered, and accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and College of American Pathologists (CAP), Lurie Children’s Blood Bank Laboratory and the American Red Cross established a Blue Tie Tag Program to provide better matching of red blood cells for sickle cell disease patients, thereby reducing the number of adverse transfusion events.
This full service Microbiology Laboratory offers various diagnostic assays for. Testing includes pathogen culture and identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and qualitative and quantitative molecular assays for BK virus, CMV, EBV and adenovirus. We utilize state of the art test methodologies, such as MALDI-TOF and multiplex molecular techniques as well as conventional methods to provide timely and high quality results.
Point-of-care testing (POCT) is performed in inpatient and ambulatory units of Lurie Children’s, as well as several satellite locations. The type of POCT performed depends on the clinical needs of that specific area and includes waived and non-waived POCTs such as bedside glucose, blood gases and rapid molecular flu testing.
The Mass Spectrometry Laboratory analyzes small molecules used in a variety of clinical applications including endocrinology, therapeutic drug monitoring, inborn errors of metabolism and kidney function.
The Diagnostic Immunology and Flow Cytometry Laboratory performs over 80,000 diagnostic tests each year covering the sub-specialties of primary immunodeficiency diseases, allergy and immunology, rheumatology, autoimmune and infectious-disease serology and hematologic malignancies.
The Genetics Laboratories offers cytogenetic, molecular and biochemical testing for the diagnosis of inherited disorders as well as providing cytogenetic and molecular testing for the identification and classification of hematopoietic and soft tissue malignancies. The Genetic Laboratories also offers consultative services for genetic testing to assure appropriate and cost effective laboratory test utilization.
