​Graduate & Postdoctoral Training Program

The Stanley Manne Children's Research Institute Training Program is a dedicated and distinguished endeavor, developing outstanding graduate and post-graduate scientists for their careers. Not only does training prepare them for individual success, but, under the guidance of our faculty members, the students and fellows contribute to breakthrough research and technologies that aid in the application of basic science discoveries to clinical practice.

The training program provides learning and mentoring for graduate students, postdoctoral and clinical fellows working in research institute laboratories.

Graduate Students

The graduate students belong to the three graduate programs of the Feinberg School: 

The research institute offers an environment in which the students interact frequently, regardless of discipline. These collaborative efforts among laboratories encourage innovation.

Postdoctoral Fellows

Postdoctoral fellows come to the research institute from world-renowned research universities. They play prominent roles in the laboratories, including designing their research plans, publishing in prestigious journals and mentoring students.

Clinical Fellows

Quality education is inseparable from our quality patient care. Lurie Children’s is the pediatric teaching hospital for the Feinberg School. As part of their training, clinical fellows are required to complete a research project during their tenure.The fellows select a faculty mentor and conduct a year-long investigation of a research topic of importance in their subspecialty.

Trainee Activities

All of our trainees play an active role in the training program, organize themselves into committees and coordinate a number of activities. They hold monthly meetings to discuss science and other issues of importance to their career trajectories. They run a peer-reviewed travel award program to attend scientific meetings, as well as invite outside speakers for career-planning discussions and research talks.

In addition, the trainees organize the annual Biomedical Research Symposium, a day of science that highlights research opportunities to incoming Northwestern graduate students and provides peer-to-peer discussions and scientific exchange for the Chicago biomedical communities.

Training program director Philip M. Iannaccone, MD, PhD collaborates with and advises the trainees on the planning and execution of numerous activities within the program.
