Sobel Awarded Research Honor; Sredni Awarded Mentoring Honor

Elaine Sobel, a student who conducted a summer research project in the laboratory of Simone Treiger Sredni, MD, PhD, received the Fletcher Undergraduate Research Award from Northwestern University Provost Jonathan Holloway, PhD, at an awards luncheon held on December 8. In recognition of her mentoring, Sredni received the Karl Rosengren Faculty Mentoring Award. Sobel received the award in recognition of her outstanding summer research project.

The award letter said in part: "the URG Committee, made up of faculty from across the University, reviewed your nomination taking into consideration the quality of the initial proposal, the final research findings, the statements of the faculty advisor, and opinions of the original reviewers of the proposal. Through that rigorous process, you were finally selected as the top student in the arts, humanities, and performance division. The Summer URG program seeks to fund the top students across the University, so to be selected from among these ranks is a significant accomplishment, highlighting your intelligence, creativity, and dedication."

Sredni is Research Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and director of a laboratory at Stanley Manne Children's Research Institute.
