Institutional Review Board

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is an independent board of Lurie Children’s charged with safeguarding the rights and welfare of human participants in research. As part of the Lurie Children’s Human Research Protection Program (HRPP), the IRB helps assure compliance with all federal, state, and institutional policies for all research that involves humans. All research studies at Lurie Children’s involving human subjects requires prior approval from the IRB.

Lurie Children’s has two separate IRB panels composed of scientific experts from divisions and departments of the hospital, non-scientists and non-affiliated community members. The non-scientists and non-affiliated members represent the perspective of research subjects and their families. The second IRB panel is a joint venture with Northwestern University to foster collaborations in research, facilitate research being conducted at both institutions and ensure studies involving minors at the university adequately protect the rights and welfare of this population.

The Office of Research Integrity and Compliance (ORIC) directed by Catherine Powers supports the IRB and facilitates the prompt and thorough review of new, amended and continuing research that requires IRB approval.
