Clinical Decision Rules to Discriminate Bruising Caused by Physical Child Abuse from Bruising Caused by Accidental Trauma

Official Title: Clinical Decision Rules to Discriminate Bruising Caused by Physical Child Abuse from Bruising Caused by Accidental Trauma

Principal Investigator: Mary Clyde Pierce

Our objective is to conduct a definitive study to investigate the bruising characteristics in children less than 4 years of age due to abusive and accidental trauma and model the results into a highly sensitive and clinically sensible tool for identifying bruising caused by child abuse. This study is a multi-center NIH (NICHD) sponsored study. Our long-term goal is to change practice through an evidence-based guideline for bruising thereby decreasing errors in decision making that lead to poor patient outcomes in a highly vulnerable population.
