"Our overall ranking among this elite group reflects our strong focus on quality of care," says Patrick M. Magoon, President and CEO, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. "We look forward to making further strides as we open our state-of-the-art facility, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, which was specifically designed to increase patient safety, improve outcomes and accommodate new technology."
Since 2007, U.S. News rankings of children’s hospitals have put an increasing emphasis on survival rates, patient volumes, nurse staffing and available technology. This year, the magazine surveyed 178 pediatric centers to obtain hard data such as availability of key resources and ability to prevent complications and infections. The hospital survey made up 75 percent of the rankings. A separate reputational survey in which 1,500 pediatric specialists—150 in each specialty—were asked where they would send the sickest children in their specialty made up the remaining 25 percent.
The rankings feature 50 hospitals in each of 10 pediatric specialties: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, neonatology, kidney disease, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology. Eighty hospitals across the country made the list in one or more specialties. Read the full rankings and methodology.
