Rail Safety

Follow these steps to keep safe near railways:

  • It can take a mile or more to stop a train – cross tracks only at designated pedestrian or roadway crossings
  • Never walk around lowered gates at a crossing
  • Bells are only one of the warning devices on a locomotive; horns also provide a louder audible warning
  • Do not cross the tracks immediately after a train passes, there might be another train coming
  • Trains do not always travel on a predictable schedule – always expect a train at every highway-rail crossing at anytime, from any direction
