Thrombophilia Program

Our Thrombophilia Program provides dedicated services in a family-friendly environment to promote the health and well-being of children and adolescents with thrombotic disorders. The program brings together a team of thrombophilia specialists to treat and educate children in order to reduce and prevent unwanted clots anywhere in the body. We help families become self-reliant with home therapies when possible, such as management of anticoagulation with home monitoring devices.

The Lurie Children’s Difference

We provide thorough treatment, including medical care, education, social support and genetic counseling to many of children and adolescents with bleeding disorders. Our program approach emphasizes:

  • Treating patients with a multidisciplinary team of experts
  • Incorporating new research for treatment options
  • Educating families and children about treatment and disease management

What to Expect

We believe in family-centered care, which means we involve the whole family in a patient’s treatment plan. From bringing family members into care plan meetings, to providing support and distraction to a patient’s siblings, we do our best to help fit our care within your lifestyle. We customize treatment and education to meet the needs of both life-long and one-time patients.

Our Specialists

Our program brings together pediatric hematologists, nurse specialists, social workers, a genetic counselor and an outreach coordinator. The program’s multidisciplinary team is led by Anjali Sharathkumar, MD, and Rukhmi Bhat, MD . Dr. Sharathkumar is Director of the Thrombophilia Program and Attending Physician in Hematology/Oncology. She is board-certified in pediatric hematology/oncology and pediatrics. Dr. Bhat is Attending Physician in hematology/oncology and is board-certified in pediatrics.
