Our Hemophilia Program provides dedicated services in a family-friendly environment to promote the health and well-being of children and adolescents with hemophilia, von Willebrand disease or platelet disorders. We strive to assist families in achieving self-reliance with home therapies so most symptoms can be effectively managed through home care. The center brings together a team of hemophilia specialists to provide top-quality care, with expertise in assessing symptoms, administering infusion medications, assessing joins and educating parents and their children.
The Lurie Children’s Difference
Our program is a federally designated regional hemophilia treatment center. We provide comprehensive treatment, including medical care, education, social support, genetic counseling, dental evaluations and physical therapy consultations to hundreds of children and adolescents with bleeding disorders. Our program approach emphasizes:
- Treating patients with a multidisciplinary team of experts
- Incorporating new research into our treatment options
- Educating families and children about treatment and disease management
What to Expect
Treatment is unique for each child, based on their needs and the family’s experience level with hemophilia. While a cure is not currently available, the disorder may be managed effectively by treating bleeds appropriately, getting comprehensive checkups at the hemophilia treatment center and exercising to maintain healthy joints.
Based on your child’s needs, we can incorporate specialty services, such as:
A major component of our program is education and outreach to best prepare your family, school and community with prevention techniques to minimize complications. Our outreach coordinator is able to organize informative sessions with educators at your child’s school to familiarize them with the condition. We offer parental support and networking programs; educational and social events; and connections to community resources to engage the community of families with diagnosed children.
Our program brings together pediatric hematologists, nurse specialists, social workers, a genetic counselor, physical therapists, pediatric dentists, orthopedists and a hemophilia outreach coordinator. The program’s multidisciplinary team is led by Anjali Sharathkumar, MD, and Rukhmi Bhat, MD . Dr. Sharathkumar is Director of the program and Attending Physician in Hematology/Oncology. She is board-certified in pediatric hematology/oncology and pediatrics. Dr. Bhat is Attending Physician in Hematology/Oncology and is board-certified in pediatric hematology/oncology and pediatrics.
