  • Dr. Carl Backer was invited by several societies to lecture in Spring 2016:
    • American College of Cardiology 65th Annual Scientific Session, held in Chicago April 2-4, 2016. 
    • Asian Society for Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (ASCVTS) Annual Meeting, held in Taipei, Taiwan, April 6-10, 2016. 
    • 4th Joint Meeting of the European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association-Congenital Heart Surgeons’ Society, held in Venice, Italy, June 22-24, 2016. 
  • Dr. John Costello presented the Heart Center’s findings on pediatric cardiac surgical outcomes following implementation of a novel acuity adaptable care model at the 96th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, held in Baltimore, May 14-18, 2016.
  • Dr. Conrad Epting’s laboratory presented their work on two projects at The Keystone Symposia 2015-2016 held in Snowbird, UT, April 3-7, 2016, and  at the 12th Annual Lewis Landsberg Research Day, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, held in Chicago on April 7, 2016. 
  • Dr. Michael Mongé presented the Heart Center’s results with successful bridge-to-transplant of functionally univentricular patients with a modified continuous-flow ventricular assist device at the 12th International Conference on Pediatric Mechanical Circulatory Support Systems & Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Perfusion, held in New York City, May 18-21, 2016.

  • Heart of Chicago Award – December 15, 2015
    • Pat Magoon, Lurie Children's CEO, accepted the American Heart Association's Heart of Chicago Award on behalf of the entire Heart Center for their outstanding work. He looks forward to continuing the strong research-focused partnership between Lurie Children's and the AHA.
  • Congenital Heart Surgeons' Society – October 25-26, 2015 
    • At the 2015 meeting of the Congenital Heart Surgeons’ Society, Carl Backer, MD, President-Elect of CHSS, presented on “Partial Atrioventricular Septal Defect: What Is The Ideal Age For Repair?” Lurie Children’s cardiac surgeons also presented a video on the Slide Tracheoplasty procedure, as well as two poster presentations on “Novel Modifications of a Ventricular Assist Device” and “Anomalous Aortic Origin of the Coronary Artery: Symptoms Do Not Correlate with Intramural Length."

  • 13th SPR Hands-On Cardiac MR Basic Course – October 13-15, 2015 
  • The Summit on Transparency and Public Reporting of Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease Outcomes, hosted by the Pediatric Congenital Heart Association, was held at and sponsored by Lurie Children’s on August 19-20, 2015. The summit brought experts from around the country together to discuss this important issue.
  • The Marfan Foundation, Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Lurie Children’s co-hosted the 31st Annual Family Conference for People with Marfan and Related Disorders in August 2015.
  • The Third Annual Midsummer Chicagoland Perfusion Meeting at Lurie Children's – July 24, 2015.

    • February 19, 2015 - Guest Speaker, the Division of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, Baltimore, MD, on “Vascular Rings: the Chicago Contribution.”
    • February 6, 2015 - 15th Annual International Symposium on Congenital Heart Disease, St Petersburg, FL. Within the section on Overview of Normal Coronary Anatomy and Congenital Abnormalities of the Coronary Arteries, Dr Backer’s presentation is on “My Favorite Operation on Coronary Arteries with Intraoperative Video.”
    • February 26-28, 2015 - University of Virginia Cardiovascular Conference, "Heart Team Approach to Cardiovascular Disease," in Wintergreen, VA. Dr. Backer’s presentation is on “Use of the TandemHeart in Pediatric Patients Awaiting Transplantation.”

Local

  • Patrick Magoon, CEO of Lurie Children’s, received the Heart of Chicago award from the American Heart Association at Lurie Children’s on December 15, 2015, to honor his contributions to the American Heart Association.

Regional

  • Dr. Thomas Kleisli, Congenital Cardiac Surgery Fellow 2015-2016, presented a poster at the Midwest Pediatric Cardiology Society 39th Annual Meeting, held at Children’s Hospital of Illinois-Peoria, September 10-11, 2015, on Successful Repair of Anomalous Single Coronary Artery from the Pulmonary Artery with an Intramural Coronary Artery.

National

  • Dr. Carl Backer was co-author of a paper presented  at the Annual Meeting of the Congenital Heart Surgeons’ Society, Chicago, IL, October 25-26, 2015, on Developing a National Model for Regionalization of Care for Children Undergoing Congenital Cardiac Surgery in the United States.
  • Dr. Shyamasundar Balasubramanya, Congenital Cardiac Surgery Fellow 2014-2015, presented a video on Slide Tracheoplasty in an Infant with Complete Tracheal Rings and Left Lung Agenesis at the Annual Meeting of the Congenital Heart Surgeons’ Society, Chicago, IL, October 25-26, 2015.
  • Dr. Carl Backer CL presented a paper at  the 62nd Annual Meeting of the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, Lake Buena Vista, FL, November 4-7, 2015, on Partial Atrioventricular Septal Defect: What is the Ideal Age for Repair?
