Cardiovascular-Thoracic Surgery Research

Carl Backer, MD, head of the division, participated in a study with Mark Wainwright, MD, PhD, of the Division of Neurology, Shannon Haymond, PhD, of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and others to test the hypothesis that elevated preoperative asymmetrical dimethylarginine levels are associated with overall worse clinical outcomes after pediatric cardiopulmonary bypass surgery.

He also conducted retrospective studies on outcomes of surgical therapy for infective endocarditis, surgical morphology of inlet ventricular septal defects, and primary resection of kommerell diverticulum and left subclavian artery transfer in children.
