ParentWISE® (Parent Wisdom In Shared Experience®) and PeerWISE (Peer Wisdom In Shared Experience) are unique hospital volunteer programs. ParentWISE is offered by parents for parents, and builds on a parent initiative established in 1987. In 2013, ParentWISE received national recognition when it was granted a Hospital Award for Volunteer Excellence by the American Hospital Association.

Building on the common bond of children's illness or care experiences, ParentWISE:

  • Connects the parents of current patients with experienced and specially-trained parent volunteers who listen and offer support in various ways
  • Empowers parents to partner effectively with their child’s care team and to advocate for their child during and after treatment
  • Supports families in managing the stresses of having a child who needs specialized medical and/or surgical care

As a parent, the person making day-to-day healthcare decisions for your child, you may feel uncertain, anxious and isolated. Not even well-intentioned family and friends know first-hand what you are going through. But there are other parents who do.

Our Parent Volunteers

Our trained ParentWISE volunteers are available in person or by phone to offer hope and practical support to families. They have this unique ability because they are parents of children who have received specialized care or treatment.

Our volunteers are present throughout every treatment stage, from the waiting room through discharge and beyond. They are available on the phone, in common locations throughout the hospital and at your child’s bedside.
