Preparing Your Child for a Blood Draw

Your healthcare provider may ask for a blood draw to gather more information about how your child’s body is working.

A phlebotomist is a person that specializes in drawing blood and they can answer any questions about the test.

What to expect during a blood draw:

  1. The phlebotomist will bring you and your child to the lab room.
  2. Patients can either sit in our big blue comfy chair on their own or sit on your lap.
  3. The phlebotomist will find the best place in either your child’s arms or hands.
  4. A large latex-free band is applied to make the vein easier to see and feel.
  5. A small area on your child’s skin is cleaned and a cold spray (Pain Ease) is offered to make the blood draw less painful.
  6. Next, a small needle is inserted and the blood flows out through a tiny tube and fills small containers.
  7. The needle is removed, pressure is applied followed by a bandage.

To prepare for your visit, please:

  • Decide if it would help to allow your child to sit on your lap or hold their hand
  • Let the phlebotomist know if your child has any special needs, including fainting, extreme fear from previous draws, etc.
  • Bring comfort and/or distraction items such as a favorite toy, blanket or phone
  • Bring your lab order form (if provided) and your insurance information.

Please ask your healthcare provider for the results of your test.
